Originally founded in 1992, the Kelowna Volleyball Club has grown from just one U15/U16 women’s team to over 200 athletes playing on over 20 teams in all age categories both male and female. The club is a registered non-profit society and is a member of both Volleyball BC and Volleyball Canada. The club provides a range of quality programs from entry to elite training for athletes and opportunities for coaches and other volunteers to participate in the sport of volleyball.
The core business of the Kelowna Volleyball Club is athlete development. We follow the guidelines set out in Volleyball Canada’s “Long Term Athlete Development” model and subscribe to the “Volleyball for Life” philosophy. Our focus is on assisting athletes develop their potential in the sport of volleyball. Part of this development requires appropriate competition. Consequently, in addition to training, the KVC places athletes on teams and enters competitions sanctioned by Volleyball Canada and Volleyball BC. While our stress is on athlete development, we have been successful in winning many medals at both the Provincial and National Championships.
Athletes participating in Kelowna Volleyball Club programs enjoy the benefits of training and competing under the direction of outstanding coaches. The club is fortunate to attract the services of some of the finest coaches in the region. Many of our coaches have provincial team, and even national team experience. The coaching staff also includes former KVC players, who bring their own unique experience to the program. All coaches are NCCP certified. Many members of our coaching staff have gone on to coach at the college and university level. Doug Reimer, a former National Team Coach and current coach of the UBC Thunderbirds Women’s Team (three-time consecutive CIS national champions) was a former coach with the Kelowna Volleyball Club. The head coaches of the UBCO Heat, Steve Manuel and Greg Poitras, are former KVC coaches and remain involved with the club.
The Kelowna Volleyball Club has produced numerous provincial team athletes. Additionally, many of our graduates have gone on to play at colleges and universities across Canada and the United States. Presently, many ex-KVC players are on the men’s and women’s rosters of the UBCO Heat. A few of our alumni have reached the ultimate standard of representing Canada as a member of our national team. Currently, two alumni play on Canada’s National Women’s Team. Several others play professionally in Europe and Asia.
